DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Madonna and Child with Saints Peter, Paul, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist
The 14th-century polyptych attributed to Ugolino di Nerio, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter, Paul, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist, is a significant work of Sienese sacred art. The painting is historically linked to Brolio Castle in Gaiole in Chianti, housed in the Ricasoli Collection.
It is a polyptych with multiple sections. The central panel features the Madonna and Child, flanked on either side by the full-length or half-length figures of the four key saints of the Church and the Johannine tradition: Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint John the Evangelist. The upper sections (cusps or cymatiums) feature the Eternal Blessing and figures of angels.
Painted in tempera and gold on wood, it features refined hallmarks on the gold background, typical of the Sienese school.
The work is generally dated between 1326 and 1350 (or more precisely around the 1320s), the height of the artist's artistic maturity.
It is clearly influenced by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Ugolino's teacher. It is distinguished by the profound aristocratic delicacy of the faces, the Gothic elegance of the lines, and the meticulous attention to detail in the drapery and iconographic attributes.
The work belongs to the private Ricasoli collection, although it is officially registered in the General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage under the protection of the local Superintendency.
