DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The painting is a faithful reproduction of Rest on the Flight into Egypt with Saint Francis by Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, the original of which is now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Although the authorship is traditionally attributed to Francesco Nasini, a prominent member of a well-known family of painters from Amiata, some catalogues remain uncertain as to the definitive attribution, calling it "a copy after Correggio, perhaps by the hand of Francesco Nasini."
The scene follows Correggio's scheme inspired by the apocryphal Gospels, showing Saint Joseph offering dates to the Baby Jesus, picked from a palm tree that had miraculously bent down to offer its fruit.
