According to the Brolio archives, the construction of the castle of San Polo in Rosso can be traced back to the 8th century. At that time, a parish church already stood on the hill.
The name of the parish church is mentioned in documents from 1070 preserved in the Badia a Coltibuono as Sancti Pauli scito Russo. In 1203, it was established that San Polo in Rosso belonged to the Florentine countryside, including the parish territory.
From the 12th century until about 30 years ago, the castle was owned by the famous and influential Ricasoli Firidolfi family. The history of San Polo has been heavily influenced by internal disputes within this family.
In this regard, a singular episode occurred in 1351, when the parish priest Raniero Ricasoli was attacked by his nephews, who claimed ownership and management of the church. They were repelled and driven away only following the intervention of Florentine troops.
The complex features two 15th-century circular towers at the north-east and south-east corners, with a ribbed base and pierced at various heights by numerous arquebusiers with horizontal splays facing outward.
On the west side stands a square tower from the late 13th century, with a sloping base, while a smaller one, from the same period but without a sloping base, stands on the south side.
