The work, located to the left of the high altar, is considered by some sources to be a copy or an autograph replica of a subject dear to the Sienese painter.
Casolani, an exponent of late Mannerism influenced by Federico Barocci and Veronese, painted several variations on this sacred theme, including the famous Lamentation preserved in Siena.
