The church is known as the Badiola, a name derived from the presence of a nunnery in this church, the first certain mention of which dates back to 1187, when the patrons of the monastery were the Lords of Trebbio. According to some sources, the monastery was founded by a group of Sienese nobles in 1089 and was subordinate to the Abbey of Montecelso. In 1187, a dispute broke out between the two monasteries, and it is thanks to that episode that it has been possible to uncover some information about the history of Santa Maria in Colle. In the papal tithes of 1302, the church is defined as a canonical one and appears as a suffragan of the parish church of San Giusto in Salcio.
The church is considered one of the most interesting Romanesque buildings in Chianti from a historical and archaeological perspective. It has a single nave with a trussed roof and a semicircular apse. On the right side of the façade is a small bell gable. The current church is the result of a later adaptation, given that it originally had three naves, as can be deduced from the presence of some arches on the sides that in the ancient church divided the central nave from the two side naves. To the right of the apse, the right arm of the transept, which corresponded to the terminal section of the right aisle, is still intact. The apse's exterior appears to have been reassembled, so much so that a small window that did not exist outside is visible inside. The façade is the result of various alterations and is completely missing on the right side of the right aisle, whose perimeter wall emerges from the ground all the way to the transept. The left side is intact, and the side wall of the corresponding aisle is used for agricultural storage.
